Joan Crawford: The Hate Goes On

Love her or hate her, many years after her death Joan Crawford is still causing controversy

Lookin' pretty good for an "old broad"

When Larry Quirk and I co-authored the book JOAN CRAWFORD: The Essential Biography we had no idea of the intense emotions it would create in so many people. Reviews for the book were generally positive and respectful, though in many cases the few negative reactions had more to do with the reviewer's attitude toward Crawford than toward our book. (Variety chose to have the book, which was written by two veteran and experienced writers, reviewed by some pipsqueak whose sole literary credit was a "bio-bibliography" we'd never heard of. He confused Larry Quirk with his uncle James R. Quirk of Photoplay fame, saying Larry had been one of Crawford's lovers when it was actually James, and in general disgraced himself by making it readily apparent that he'd only skimmed the book and had little true idea of its contents. He claimed that none of the people who say Christina lied about her mother's child abuse were in the house at the time, completely ignoring the fact -- which we clearly state in the text -- that her two sisters were there and found Christina's stories "fake and fictional." But then he wasn't the only one who chose to blatantly ignore this.)
A reviewer for the Washington Post who probably thinks the Star Wars movies are intellectual decided that Crawford was the least talented of the major screen stars (without seeing most of her performances, I'd be willing to bet) and derided us for daring to suggest that A Woman's Face not only featured a good performance from Joan but was also a good picture. (No explosions, car crashes, or whichever young actress is the flavor of the month, I guess). Reviewing another book on the same page this fellow gave an example of what he thought of as fine writing and chose a sentence that was laughably pretentious, silly, and overwritten -- and essentially said nothing. And this nitwit reviews for a major paper!
Some of the Amazon.com readers of JOAN CRAWFORD: The Essential Biography (assuming they actually did read the book, which is sometimes doubtful) were positively apoplectic of our "defense" of a "child abuser," pouring out in often sub-literate rants their unwarranted and often ludicrous venom towards a woman they had never met and did not know. Frankly how can anyone take Christina seriously after her completely unfounded claims (on the Larry King show, where she was promoting an updated edition of her attack on her mother) that Crawford murdered fourth husband Alfred Steele. Not only does this make absolutely no sense, it should have completely destroyed Christina's credibility for all time.  But people believe what they want to believe. Perhaps if some of these people had actually read our book instead of jumping to conclusions...

Joan appeared on the popular TV show The Man from U.N.C.L.E. in 1967. The episode was entitled “The Five Daughters Affair” and Joan, although she gave it a lot of class, was killed off almost at the very beginning. It was always intended to turn the two-part episode into a feature film [The Karate Killers] for European markets, and Joan was hired to add marquee value. Here she poses with (from left to right) David McCallum, Robert Vaughn, and Leo G. Carroll. She was given a THRUSH rifle as a souvenir [THRUSH was the sinister group who was always fighting UNCLE agents]. Joan, however, played a “good guy” in this. [NOTE: For more on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. visit Quirk's Reviews Online at http://quirksreviews.tripod.com.] In The Man from UNCLE Book by Jon Heitland, David McCallum said: "I remember Joan Crawford vividly. With the red carpet, and the flowers, and the wallpaper on the dressing room, everything beautifully done but nothing matching. It was a wonderful Hollywood moment when she arrived on the set." Joan told producer Norman Felton that she got a great kick out of showing the THRUSH rifle to her friends.
